What is an internship?
An internship is an experience where students apply their academic training and interests to work off-campus, in a professional workplace setting. These experiences allow students to not only decide on post-graduation plans, but to network and gain professional skills.
Can an intership be paid?
Yes, and internship can be a paid or unpaid experience.
Is a volunteer position an internship?
It depends on what your role and duties will be. You need to have meaningful projects, opportunity to be part of a team, and participate in the internship class for credit.
Can I use my current job for internship credit?
We highly encourage you to have a new experience at a new organization. In some cases, we can count your current job if you will be taking on a new role, project, or experience.
When does the internship application open for the next semester?
It will open up with BYU registration dates.
How do I apply for credit?
Make sure you have taken all the pre-requisites for your major, complete an internship application. Once that is approved you will be allowed to regiser for the internship course.
How many credits can I get for my internship?
It depends on your Department, so check with your Internship Coordinator. Generally, 42 hours of work is equal to 1 credit and most Departments require 3 credits, or 126 hours of work through the semester. That is about 7-10 hours a week.
When is the best time to do an internship?
Junior or Senior year are ideal for internship experiences, but some Organizations will accept interns before that so check with your Department and Organization.
